“Vallarpadam Container Terminal a mile-stone” Mr Manmohan Singh

12 February 2011   View Comments

The Vallarpadam International Container Trans-shipment Terminal was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh. Sadly the port area is not open for civilians so we did the next best thing, hit the new road connecting Vallarpadam with Kalamassery. Gallans do some riding/driving in the new road because the view will remind you of Alappey. Here is Nagavishnu’s ( a good friend of Kochigallan the mosquito ) review of the place. He is an Engineer with work experience in the terminal and thus qualifies to share the gyan

“International container Transshipment Terminal is billed as the largest single-operator container terminal in the country. The place will now be the hub of all international trades and  will be a great advantage for kerala specially Cochin.
Only 1st phase of works are completed now . But it is really awesome to see the whole port area. It looks like a different country,  like some arab country inside the port area. The place is CEZ area and civilians cant enter.

Speaking about the new road.

The new 4 lane national highway in the state that begins from the NH 47 at kalamassery ( rail route to the terminal also starts at Kalamassery).  Its nearly 15-16 kms from Kalamassery to the terminal and this route can be used to reach Ernakulam high court Junction  (15kms). There will be  toll for using  the road. The road will let u reach the NH17 at Cheranellor, the sole junction in between. The real advantage of using this road is to save time and also it offers a smooth drive along with enjoying the beauty of the villages ( or what used to be) . The road is through sides of backwaters.
It takes just 15 mins to reach the highcourt junction from Kalamassery ( with a speed of 50kms/hr). Just the work of 2 lanes are completed now and within 3-4 months the road wil be completely opened. The rail from Kalammassery to the terminal is 75% through a bridge which is the longest railway bridge in the India.” :- Nagavishnu S Panicker
